sheesh guys just a game. Everyone has lost rent and characters. You worry about items that are easy to get, but a lot of us lost characters that took days to level. Single class druids, cl/wa/th's with good reinc. This is gonna happen until the end of time since unicus gave the code Macbeth his family member. So get no rent items and enjoy the game when it is up to play. well, I think it's all relative. Even though I'm new (expert on dale muds, but new to this particular mud), I had no particular difficulties in level up chars (I have already two 50/50/50 chars, and one is a cl/wa/th with good reinc )... instead, some items are not easy to get (they require a group and an expert guide), and one item was given to me by another player, and I would hate loosing it. Of course I agree with u: it's just a game

good luck.Shadow Dale doesnt really have anyone in charge so good luck getting what you want. could you please explain what you mean saying that no one is in charge: isn't Macbeth the implementor of the game? What's the situation of this mud? Please, don't tell me to read the fb discussions, because I haven't got a fb account. Thanks in advance.

not surprisly there's no reply. In June, before rolling my first char, I started a discussion regarding the situation of the various dale (derived) muds, here: sdmud.proboards.com/thread/66/dale-mudsand there has been no reply as well. All I've read regarding the mud situation are short and disconsolate sentences or accusations... is there anyone willing to inform and discuss it seriously?

MUD Crash

Macbeth can't fix/change/add/delete zones/items/bugs. he just keeps the mud accessible. They won't let anyone else use/fix/update the code without the parker family's permission. They say it isn't their code, but no one else will take control. I doubt they ever will. It has been dead for 15yrs now. It was getting fixed for a while then unicus gummed it up, or was it MAxum fault? Some people might defend unicus, but then some might defend maxum for trying to save the code/game for future.

Dear guest Macbeth can't fix/change/add/delete zones/items/bugs. he just keeps the mud accessible. How is it possible? Macbeth is hosting the mud, right? If he can't access the code, that means he's hosting a precompiled version of the mud. Ok. But what about zones? In my opinion, a mud is composed of code (20%), zones (70%) e char db (10%). Therefore, I assume Macbeth has full access at least to zones and chars. They won't let anyone else use/fix/update the code without the parker family's permission. They say it isn't their code, but no one else will take control. Who's "they"? Parker's family? Anyway, "they" are right: the code isn't their Shadowdale is modified Dalemud, which is modified Silly which is modified Diku. The original Diku license, in summary, let anyone do anything with the code, as long as one makes no money with it and one writes the names of the original authors. I think it was a crude attempt to achieve what a GNU license stated many years later. Dalemud 3 code is available in many websites and its license is here: github.com/rebl/DaleMUD/blob/master/doc/DaleMUD.README! In particular, Mike Wilson, the author, writes: " Most of the coding was already there for me to use. Further I do not want any claims to copyrights nor anything near it..." " If you DO find a bug and fix it please let me know about it so I can correct the code I will distribute." So, each author using a modified Dalemud code, should be at least morally obliged to distribute the code. In summary: the zone db is available at least to Macbeth, AND it doesn't belong to a single author: strictly speaking, each zone is the intellectual property of its author, but most zones are completely free and freely available in many website: as an example, take a look to tbamud project. The code (Dalemud 3) is there to use, access, fix, modify, etc. There's been also an attempt to adapt it to compile in modern pc: github.com/rebl/DaleMUDAssuming Shadowdale code is not in control of Macbeth, but only of Parker's family (Unicus, if I'm correct?), it should be noted that any fix and any code's line given to Unicus by other authors (Maxum, always if I'm correct?) is the intellectual property of the other authors. So, I think these other authors can use Shadowdale Code with the same rights that Unicus use a modified Dalemud code.

Sorry for the delay in response. Right now I am moving Cross country and it is going to take some time. For the moment I have the mud running on an older computer of mine at a friends place, so there seems to be a number of connection issues and such going on there. I will just have to keep the system checked when I can, but right now I do not have internet and can only do so much from my phone. as soon as I can get the system back up I'll let everyone know. I am hoping to be done with everything and settled in before the end of the year, and then the mud should be on a stable connection again.

Hey Mac, hope everything goes well with the moving. If the mud is running on a machine that is not reliable, I suggest you take it down until you are settled because all the crashing and hanging were taking the fun of playing away. Just my 2 cents. Take care and thank you for keeping the MuD alive, playing again brought back a lot of memories...

The computer is fine, this mud ran on one far older before this. Right now it's the connection that seems to be having the main issues. I have the mud back up for now

I have the mud back up for now sorry to repeat it, but since the connection is so unstable, I think you should stop rent. Keeping the mud up and not accessible to players is like a massive DT! and by the way, if I were you, a dramatic reduction in rent costs and the replacement of DTs with temporary freezes are the first actions I'd do on this mud (besides making the correct address - sdmud.thedragonscodpiece.com:8989 - available in the official website...) thanks, bye

Once again. He doesn't have authority to make changes, nor has anyone ever stopped rent for the mud being down. The computer is fine, this mud ran on one far older before this. Right now it's the connection that seems to be having the main issues. I have the mud back up for now

Once again. He doesn't have authority to make changes, nor has anyone ever stopped rent for the mud being down. stopping rent is a simple option when launching ./dmserver regarding authority, let him reply (he hasn't done that so far): I'm pretty sure that technically he can do whatever he wants, since he has installed the game on another machine, and that implies that he's compiled the source code from scratch. mud being down is a thing, mud being up and not accessible is another thing: anyway, changing view (and mind) in my opinion is essential... don't stick to what happened in the past, we should look ahead, and change the game into something enjoyable in 2014
